Political malpractice is all too common in politics. It can take many forms and ranges from small misdemeanors like under-the-table deals and influence peddling to larger ones like vote buying or destroying opponent's campaigns through libel.

Many times it’s done in a way that masks the originator of the misdeed or where the crime itself isn't easily traceable. Despite laws becoming tighter (in most places) in an attempt to stop these political malpractices from occurring, they still manage to find their way into politics from time to time. This is why keeping our eyes open for potential misdoings, speaking out against them when we find it, and continuously striving for accountability among our elected officials is imperative for any functioning democracy.

Corruption is a major factor, with instances of bribery and vote-rigging amongst politicians rampant and influencing elections. This culture creates an environment where powerful individuals can keep themselves in power without actually serving their constituents’ needs and demands.

The lack of good governance has resulted in;

• Ø  Water and electricity shortages,
• Ø  Underfunding of public sectors such as health and education and so on.

The pervasive political instability has also led to insecurity created by bandits, militias, terrorists and other non-state actors with impunity. These problems are exacerbated by weak institutions that cannot properly investigate malpractices or punish offenders when they occur. All these issues require urgent attention to ensure the country can move forward towards a stable future.

It is now left for you and I to make these changes happen through transparent lifestyle and practical exemplary and patriotic actions.

Ultimately, if we are serious about combating electoral malpractices in Nigeria, we must learn to actively engage with politics and demand more from the people who represent us.

To be honest, controlling political malpractices in Nigeria can be difficult, but there are some measures that can be taken to help make significant progress.

• Ø  Political parties should set a good example and seriously enforce their regulations on conduct and behavior, Ensuring strict adherence to internal rules for candidates and party members.
• Ø  There must also be greater transparency in the nomination process - all candidates should declare any financial or special interest they have related to their candidacy before being allowed to stand for elections.
• Ø  Furthermore, media organizations must actively monitor the electoral process and report any irregularities.
• Ø  Finally, the electorate needs to be well-informed so they can select their representatives carefully, while electoral complaints mechanisms should allow aggrieved citizens a space to speak out against injustice.

With these measures in place, together with increased oversight from regulatory bodies such as INEC (the Independent National Electoral Commission) political malpractices may finally come under control in Nigeria.
